Cleveland, OH - The Cincinnati Enquirer reported this morning that career politician Jim Renacci has crawled deeper into the swamp with a potentially illegal "straw donor" scheme for his gubernatorial campaign this summer. The report comes a week after the Associated Press reported that Renacci was a registered lobbyist while in Congress and failed to properly disclose campaign donations.
"The more and more we learn about Jim Renacci the more and more he looks like a swamp creature," Gibbons campaign consultant Mike Biundo said. "First we learned he was a lobbyist, now we are learning about more problematic campaign donations between Renacci and his friends in Washington. Voters hate these kinds of insider shenanigans and will make it almost impossible to defeat Sherrod Brown in November."
According to the Enquirer, Renacci donated federal funds to Congressional colleagues who then turned around and donated the same or a similar amount of money to his state campaign account.
The paper quotes a campaign finance expert saying, "What this sounds like is a straw donor scenario, where Renacci is using funds from his federal campaign account to unlawfully support his state gubernatorial run and doing it through his fellow elected officials."
